Making A Garage Door Taller

Standard single car garage door widths start at 8 feet for single car garages and move up in 12 inch increments to 10 feet wide.

Making a garage door taller.

The wife wants to replace the two with one 16 overhead garage door. I removed some siding and and re did the trim on the top of the door and then recovered every thing with aluminum and installed new rubber garage door sill around the opening. I live in northern new jersey. I have a detached two car garage that is getting up there in years.

And the headroom above for a taller door. It has the old style carriage doors. Double car garage doors typically start at 12 feet wide and move. One way to do it would be to get wall extensions for the entire the garage and then cut the roof of the garage off lifting it up to the height you want it.

That made my door height two inches taller. The garage also needs a new floor and a new roof. But even with the smaller trailers the dimensions you would need for garage of at least 10 feet width and 10 12 feet height. Travel trailer also come in smaller sizes and they may need smaller door.

We had a few contractors in to give us. With this kind of width and height dimension you would need garage of around 12 feet width and 12 feet of height door. The garage is a total of 24 wide by 24 deep. Measuring a residential garage door is more than determining the dimensions of the door but making sure the garage can accommodate a garage door opener and the door in both open and closed positions.

Anyone ever done this with success. Can i add an additional 21 panel to make a taller door. I need to cut the opening to the garage 6 taller. Because garage doors are usually sized to snugly fit the dimensions of the garage itself making the door larger usually means making the garage larger.

For example i have a 9w x 7h garage door 4 21 panels. The door track should be easy as well. Just wondering if it would work to add a panel to a garage door to get more height.
